A Pfizer spokesman on Tuesday told AFP that the country’s pharmaceutical firm is seeking approval for its own generic version of Viagra.
Viagra (sildenafil) is the latest generic drug to be approved for sale by Pfizer, a US-based drug maker.
Viagra is the most-prescribed generic drug to be launched in the UK in the past 18 months, but the drug’s makers say the drug is not the same as the original branded drug.
In a statement, Pfizer said that it had “considerations” with its generic rivals to take steps to protect its patents for the drug.
Pfizer is yet to say how much of the generic drug it sells will be available in the US or how much will be available in the UK, but it is expected that Pfizer’s patent will expire on June 18.
It is hoped that its patent for Viagra will expire in the UK in the spring of 2017.
Pfizer said that the patent for Viagra was valid until 2020, when Pfizer announced that it had “already completed the process of bringing Viagra to market in the UK and that Pfizer’s patent for the medicine will expire in the UK in the spring of 2017”.
Pfizer’s Viagra is still not available by prescription in the UK, but it has been on sale there in recent weeks, with prices varying depending on where you buy the drug.
Viagra is made in the UK by the company Pfizer and was first approved for sale in the US in May.
The drug maker’s spokesman on Tuesday said that it had “considerations” with its generic rivals to take steps to protect its patents for the drug.
